ABOUT THE ARTIST

Objects Notes

EXHIBITIONS: American Art in Louisiana Private Collections 1870-1970, Riverside Museum, Baton Rouge, LA, February 2- March 31, 1985 (later rescheduled opening to March 1 due to hazardous weather conditions) CONDITION: Conserved in 2005 by Christine Young, conservator of paper and photographs, Nashville, TN. Does not appear to be any change since that conservation. See report included. ACQUISITION COST, DATE AND SOURCE: Purchased from the artist at Melrose Plantation, African House, for $650 in early 1960’s APPRAISED VALUE SUPPORT: The November 21, 2021 Neal Auction, New Orleans, LA, offered a number of the artist’s works from her 1940’s early period. Neal Auction has, by far, the largest number of realized sales for this artist’ works (528). Those with events at the Cane River Chapel were used as comparables and one, Lot 141 Baptism, was especially similar to the subject with identical condition issues. No other early works have appeard at auction since this November 2021 date. Subject is on irregular shaped pulp card and painted even into the layered torn edges and this along with condition and conservation were all considered in the final fair market value. This work was purchased from the artist which was another consideration in value.
