Between The Lines
250 Years of American Poetry
On View in the Overlook Gallery June 27 - October 10, 2026
In the Overlook Gallery, the museum presents Between the Lines: 250 Years of American Poetry, a special exhibition celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. For the exhibition, poems by notable American poets were selected, and the museum issued a nationwide call for artist proposals inspired by those literary works.
Selected artists then developed commissioned pieces in collaboration with the museum’s curatorial team and collections committee. The final exhibition includes 14 artworks by 14 artists representing eight states. Through a wide range of contemporary perspectives and artistic mediums, the exhibition explores the relationship between visual art and American poetry, inviting visitors to experience the enduring dialogue between the written word and visual expression.
