In the Lipsey Gallery, the museum presents the 39th September Competition, its annual juried exhibition featuring contemporary artwork from across the country. Open to all artistic mediums, the competition accepts only artwork completed within the last two years, ensuring the exhibition highlights current contemporary practices and emerging artistic conversations. This year’s exhibition includes 59 artworks by 49 artists representing 19 states and two countries. The selected works span a wide variety of contemporary mediums, including two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and video artwork.

This year’s juror is Chase Brandon Quinn, creative director and curator of special projects at the Mississippi Museum of Art. Quinn previously served as co-director of education and programs and curator of special projects at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina. A recipient of a South Carolina Press Association award in 2019, Quinn is also a freelance art and culture writer whose work has appeared in publications including Artforum, Condé Nast Traveler, Frieze, The Guardian, Guernica, Hyperallergic, Vanity Fair, and The World of Interiors.
