The mission of the Alexandria Museum of Art is to preserve, exhibit and promote visual art throughout central Louisiana in a way that contributes to the quality of life. To accomplish this, we educate, in order to advance the public’s knowledge of and appreciation for the value of art as a source of beauty, inspiration, information and expression.

    Arthur Secunda was born in New Jersey where his Sephardic familysettled after suffering from pogroms and other persecution in their nativeRussia.  Secunda’s abstract paintings, brightcollages and graphics, lush color and technical inventiveness belie a politicalconsciousness.  While searching for hiscreative style, he worked in the American musical form, jazz, as a pianist.  He is also one of the founders of Artforum magazine, has written extensivelyabout art in books and journals, and taught art at the university level.

  • "Obsessive Worlds"

    Obsessive Worlds is based on the obsessive nature revealed in the work of 15 contemporary artists using various media.  Their chosen aesthetic is one characterized by acute repetition, excess and tedium.  The body of work attests to the development of a post-modern "obsessive" aesthetic as a reaction to contemporary society's immersion in a fast-paced, technologically crazed, and anxiety plagued environment.  You will be obsessed with this exhibit from the Art Museum of Southeast Texas!

  • Will Henry Stevens: "The Nature of Things"

    Will Henry Stevens (1881-1949), a master of early 20th century painting, successfully ingratiated the nationalistic spirit of the American Regionalist movement with the ground breaking philosophies of the European avant garde.  This exhibition of 27 pastels and drawings from Blue Spiral 1 Gallery also features 9 new additions to AMoA's Permanent Collection, gifted by the Janet Stevens McDowell Trust.
